Learn and Burn - View Sample Flyer From 2015 (pdf)

The Sandhills Longleaf Pine Conservation Partnership (SLPCP) hosts a “Learn and Burn” on an appropriate burn day each winter. (2015 info) (2014 info)

The Learn and Burn is be a hands-on demonstration day where participants help (or just watch if they prefer) with an actual controlled burn.

We are having great success in educating landowners about the benefits of planting longleaf,” said Charles Babb (SLPCP Coordinator). “We're taking that a step further and showing them the different management skills that go along with managing longleaf.”

Prescribed fire has a long tradition in being used with managing longleaf, but needs to be used correctly. Many longleaf landowners are reluctant to use fire because they have never been exposed to it.

Babb explains that the SLPCP has been laying the groundwork for this type of field day. “This training lets landowners get into the field to see all of the information they've learned at our other events “We have also had an 8 hour classroom training on burning. Now it's time to let landowners help with an actual burn.”

The SLPCP takes landowners through the entire process of an on-site burn, including weather, safety, fuel conditions, fire line check, ignition, smoke management, monitoring and mop-up.

The target date is usually during Feb-March. Because burning is weather dependent, the Partnerhsip schedules the event, and then calls registrants three days prior to the target day and then one day prior with a go/no-go determination. “This field day should show participants how important it is to plan a prescribed fire by the weather and not the day of the week. Just because it's your day off, doesn't mean it’s necessarily a good day to burn,” explained Babb.
